A Thought on Writer’s Block…

Writer’s block can make you feel like your brain doesn’t work anymore. Sometimes, it makes me feel like I’m not a writer at all. But I’ve found the best way to keep chugging along in dire times is to separate myself from the moment that got me stuck in order to maintain momentum. So, I’ll immediately jump to a new section—it can be the ending, or just a new tangent entirely. I might even kill off a character or just start a new chapter. Robert Graves once put it: “There is no such thing as good writing, only good rewriting.” I’m reminded that what I’m writing down now isn’t final. A first draft is just brain vomit. It can (and should) can be revised, refined and perfected after the hard work is done. The main goal is to just keep going—because you can always take a hacksaw to it later.
